The Helix Brief

Developing theory-informed implementation strategies to embed a suicide safety planning intervention app into a psychiatric emergency department: co-design study using the Behaviour Change Wheel.

Revolutionize suicide prevention with the Hope App! Co-designed with clinicians, patients, and caregivers, this innovative strategy harnesses the power of digital technology to seamlessly integrate life-saving safety plans into psychiatric emergency care.
This study employed a collaborative, theory-driven approach to develop implementation strategies for embedding a suicide safety planning app (the Hope App) into a Canadian psychiatric emergency department. Using the Behaviour Change Wheel framework, the co-design team of 12 members held four iterative sessions to identify 11 tailored strategies targeting barriers and leveraging facilitators. These multifaceted strategies, encompassing various intervention functions and behaviour change techniques, aim to drive clinician adoption and ensure the app's seamless integration into routine practice. The study's strength lies in its use of behaviour change theories and its collaborative approach, which aligns the implementation with the needs and preferences of clinicians, patients, and caregivers. The findings hold promise for bridging the gap in integrating digital technology to enhance suicide prevention efforts.
