Myopathic Symptoms and Exercise Tolerance in Adolescent Patients With Long-Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders.

Adolescent patients with long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders face exercise challenges, but with proper monitoring, can maintain active lifestyles. Screening and early intervention are key to managing this complex condition.
This study assessed exercise tolerance, muscle symptoms, and activity levels in 14 adolescent patients with long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorders. The results showed decreased exercise capacity compared to healthy controls, but no adverse events during prolonged exercise under well-fed conditions. Patients reported debilitating muscle pain, especially when additional factors like infection were present. The findings suggest that exercise tests can help monitor and guide exercise potential in these patients, enabling them to maintain active lifestyles with proper management. Limitations include the small sample size and lack of longitudinal data.
